HFLA has provided 600 interest-free loans during the past three decades totaling more than $2 million. Since July 2017, HFLA is a subsidiary of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.
HFLA personal loans of up to $5,000 provide financial assistance for situations such as but not limited to emergencies, medical and dental expenses, car and housing repairs, life-cycle events, early childhood and continuing adult education, divorce, immigration costs, victims of domestic violence, mortgage and rental costs, etc.
In addition to personal loans, HFLA offers a variety of additional financing opportunities. The HFLA Entrepreneur Loan Program (HELP) provides interest-free loans of up to $10,000 to start or expand a small business. The Making Miracle Babies Fertility Fund, provides $18,000 interest-free loans for assistance with in-vitro fertilization procedure to Jewish would-be parents residing in Miami-Dade County. The Goldstein Family Adoption Fund provides $24,000 interest-free loans to be used to cover the birth mother’s medical and living expenses, adoption and attorney fees, social worker fees and court costs.
HFLA’s interest-free loans, as opposed to charity, fill an important gap in our social system by promoting self-sufficiency with discretion. Every loan disbursed by HFLA is a community investment in the dignity and independence of local families and individuals in need. Clients’ commitment to timely repayment schedules have helped HFLA maintain a reimbursement rate of more than 98 percent. As soon as monthly loan payments are deposited, HFLA approves and disperses new loans. Clients understand the process and are dedicated to timely repayment schedules as they are quite literally paying it forward to the next person in need.

The Torah mandates us to give to those less fortunate. HFLA’s mission is based on the Mitzvah of Tzedakah; one is actually required to lend money to a fellow Jew when he is in need, because this is the highest level of giving. In other words, the generous act of giving Tzedakah enables us to help those in need while fulfilling a number of Torah Commandments.

If there is among you a needy person, you should open your hand wide to him, and you should surely lend him sufficient for his needs.
